Plant description
A compact and award-winning deciduous hazel or cobnut tree with heart-shaped leaves that transition from dark purple in spring to green in summer and mature to maroon in autumn. ‘Rote Zellernuss’ bears pink catkins in late winter and early spring that attract early pollinators, and produces round, medium-sized, red to purple filbert nuts in a smooth hard wooden shell, which can be eaten fresh or used in baking and desserts. This superb variety is self-sterile so requires a pollinating partner such as ‘Purple Filbert’.
